How to Stop Candles from Tunnelling — and Get Every Last Hour from Your Candle

You light a beautiful candle, it burns for an hour or two, and then you blow it out. The next time you light it, something feels wrong. The flame is sinking into a narrow hole down the middle, and a ring of solid wax is building up around the inside of the jar. That is tunnelling — and it is one of the most frustrating things that can happen to a candle you love.

The good news is that with a quality handmade candle, it is almost entirely preventable. At Light Your Way Candles, every candle is hand-poured using a premium wax blend with a carefully sized wick — which is exactly why our candles are designed to reach a full, even melt pool and deliver up to 50 hours of fragrance from a single candle.

What Makes a Candle Tunnel?

Tunnelling happens because candle wax has a memory. The first burn is the most important one. If you extinguish the candle before the melt pool has reached the edges of the container, the wax sets with a memory of that narrow pool. Every subsequent burn follows the same path, boring deeper into the centre while the wax around the edges never melts.

Mass-produced candles are particularly prone to this — a poorly sized wick or low-quality wax blend means the heat output simply isn't enough to pull the melt pool to the edges. A handmade candle with a premium blend and a properly matched wick gives you a much better chance of an even burn from the start.

How to Prevent Candle Tunnelling

Allow a full melt pool on the first burn — let it burn until the entire top surface is liquid wax, roughly one hour per inch of the candle's diameter.

Keep your wick trimmed to 5mm before every burn for a clean, even flame.

Burn in steady sessions of two to three hours — too short and the melt pool never reaches the edges.

Keep candles away from draughts, which create an uneven flame and uneven melting.

How to Fix a Candle Already Tunnelling

If you've experienced tunnelling with another candle, all is not lost.

Long burn method: burn for three to four hours so the melt pool has time to catch up with the edges.

Foil method: tent kitchen foil loosely over the top while it burns, leaving a gap for the flame. The foil reflects heat back onto the wax surface and encourages an even pool.

Hairdryer method: use a hairdryer on low heat to melt the surface until level, smooth with a spoon, let it re-set, then relight.

The Candles Built to Burn Evenly

At Light Your Way Candles, every candle is hand-poured in our own workshop using a premium wax blend chosen for its even burn and long scent throw. Our candles are built to deliver up to 50 hours of fragrance — and that starts with a consistent, full melt pool from the very first burn.

The Large Candle is one of our most popular — generous wax volume, premium blend, and a wick sized to draw the melt pool right to the edges. The Large Round Candle is another great option: its circular shape distributes heat evenly across the surface for a clean burn every time.

The Golden Rules of Candle Care

  • First burn: let the melt pool reach the edges before blowing out

  • Trim the wick to 5mm before every burn

  • Burn for two to three hours per session

  • Keep away from draughts

  • Never burn for more than four hours at a time

  • Let wax cool completely before relighting
